For some time now I've been taking photographs of local street art which wallpapers a good portion of the downtown New York. This process has evolved into a larger theme to portray a more urban atmosphere using a multiple exposure technique with traditional film. The process involves taking a series of photographs in one isolated frame—imagine taking three photographs of the surrounding environment and then combining them all in one to create a new scene.
During this process I carefully select and crop the city environment. Typically this will consist of three shots: One of the city landscape or building, another of a street sign, lamppost or traffic light, and finally one which represents the street level—in most cases local street art, advertisements and flyers. The order of these shots changes frequently along with the focus of each scene.
In the end what you hopefully experience is a collage of color, architecture, type and graphics that make up an urban setting. The photos can be looked at as abstract or can carry you through a maze of defining the layers within each photo.
